This is the annual festival of Shirahige Shrine, the oldest in Omi. The shrine's annual festivals are held every year on May 5rd and September 3th and 9th, but the Shirahige Festival refers to the autumn festival, during which a religious ceremony called "Naruko Mairi" is held. The history of "Naruko Mairi" is long, and it is even mentioned in documents from the Edo period. When a child turns two years old (according to the Japanese age reckoning system), if you take the child to Shirahige Shrine to pray, the god will give the child a name different from his or her real name. It is said that if you call the child by this given name for a few days, they will be protected by healthy growth, a long life, and happiness throughout their lives.
