Hirokawa Festival Hirokawa Festival Hirokawa Festival

Regarding use of photos

This festival is held every year on April 4th, centered around Ashitsumi Shrine and Gyoka Tenmangu Shrine in Hirokawa, Imazu Town. The Hirokawa area is divided into five groups, and a "toya" is chosen from each group. The sacred offerings prepared by the "toya" are donated to the shrine office in the precincts, and local children perform a dance to the accompaniment of a portable shrine and music. In the afternoon, the portable shrine, carried by energetic young men, heads to Sumiyoshi Shrine in Nakahama and Omizuwake Shrine in Minamihama, where a religious ceremony is held, before returning to Ashitsumi and Gyoka Tenmangu Shrine. After the dedication of the portable shrine, the "toya" people, dressed in "kurogoro" and "kamishimo" costumes, present the sacred offerings that were donated to the shrine office to the shrine in accordance with ancient customs.
