In 38, Vories took up a position as an English teacher at Shiga Prefectural Commercial School with the goal of spreading Christianity. He was dismissed from his position as an English teacher two days after arriving in Japan, but he later opened the Vories Architectural Office, making use of the architectural design techniques he had learned as a student, and was responsible for the design of over 1905 buildings in his lifetime. A large number of Vories' works are Christian-related, such as churches, and can be found throughout the country.
