Kaizu, located in the eastern part of Makino Town, is a post town and port town that flourished as a key point on the Nishi Omi Road and lake transportation. On the lakeshore, endless stonework remains to protect the houses from wind and waves, creating a unique landscape. These ancient stonework pieces were built by Nishi Yoichizaemon, the local magistrate, during the Edo period, and are magnificent structures reminiscent of castle walls. They form a landscape that recalls the time when the town flourished as a post town and port town. The waterfront scenery of this area has been selected as the fifth Important Cultural Landscape in Japan.
