[Shiratani's Couple Camellias]
There are two giant camellia trees on the grounds of the Shirataniso Historical and Folklore Museum. They are a "couple of camellias" and have a legend connected to Mori Ogai's novel "Sansho Taiyu."Both trees have trunks measuring 2.6m and 1.6m, and are estimated to be 500 to 600 years old. They are called "Couple Camellias" because they resemble a man and a woman embracing each other. The best time to see the flowers is usually mid-April.
