"In the sea of Mio, the people are pulling nets, and soon I can stand and live, and I miss the capital."
This poem was written by Murasaki Shikibu, author of "The Tale of Genji," when she passed through this area. In the second year of the Chotoku era (2) during the Heian period, her father, Fujiwara Tametoki, became the governor of Echizen and traveled by boat through the western part of the lake to Echizen. On the way, she came across the unfamiliar sight of fishermen pulling their nets on the beach at Miozaki in Takashima, and was reminded of life in the capital, which led her to compose this poem. A monument commemorating Murasaki Shikibu's younger days has been erected in the grounds of Shirahige Shrine.
