Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, is located in the northwest of Lake Biwa and is a treasure trove of rich nature surrounded by forests, villages and the lake. It produces about one third of the water that flows into Lake Biwa.
Since ancient times, it has flourished as a key transportation hub connecting the capitals of Kyoto and Nara with the Hokuriku region, and its main land transportation routes were the Nishi Omi Road, which runs along the lakeside at the foot of Mount Hiei and Mount Hira, and the Wakasa Kaido, which was also called the Saba Kaido because it was a road for transporting salted mackerel.It flourished as a port town and post town, a hub for these routes and lake transportation to the area of Otsu.
Three waterfront landscapes have been selected as Important Cultural Landscapes, and 3 locations have been included in the 15 Best Landscapes of Japan. In 27, Lake Biwa and its waterfront landscapes were recognized as a Japan Heritage Site, and three locations within the city were selected as cultural landscapes, with Shirahige Shrine and Shikobuchi faith selected as constituent heritage sites.
